“I have long believed, as have many before me, that peaceful relations between nations require mutual respect between individuals.”
– President Dwight D. Eisenhower
President Dwight D. Eisenhower believed that ordinary citizens of different nations, if able to communicate directly, would solve their differences and find a way to live in peace. In 1956, he put those beliefs into action and created People to People Ambassador Programs.
In 1956, our 34th president called a special White House conference of American leaders, who joined him in creating the People to People initiative. As a result, the People to People mission developed around personal exchanges and firsthand experiences with other cultures.
Since 1963, Student Ambassador Programs has taken thousands of young Americans across international borders. Venturing abroad or on our own continent, Student Ambassadors return home with a greater sense of what it means to be a good neighbor and a global citizen.
Walt Disney created the “It’s a Small World” attraction in 1964 after his participation in the People to People International White House conference. This attraction has now introduced over 250 million people to the concept that we may have our differences, but underneath we all share the same core values.
It is amazing how Disney’s words are just as appropriate today as they were when introduced in 1964. With the advancement of computers and the age of the Internet, our ability to communicate with our friends and counterparts all over the globe has never been easier. Perhaps, People to People International was a bit ahead of its time, or perhaps the concept is timeless.
As Student Ambassadors and leaders travel under the banner of People to People, they represent the best of our country: hope, courage, openness and a love of peace.
President John F. Kennedy said it best: “The nature of People to People activities is as varied as the individuals involved. The housewife whose recipe contains the yeast of kindness, the soldier whose arms embrace homeless waifs, the doctor who heals with humility, all assert a single theme—the power of people, acting as individuals, to respond imaginatively to the world’s need for peace.”

What a great headline it would make if Inah, our dear Inah, could in fact take off to Australia for the opportunity of a lifetime! This is every parent's dream for her child, every sister's hope for her sibling, every friend's wish for someone close to heart, every relative's desire for her kin!
I can't tell you enough how excited we were when we learned that Inah was nominated for a spot to be among the hundreds of delegates all across the United States going abroad this summer for an ambassadorial exprience hosted by People to People. Every year, hopeful students vie for that spot and not everyone is admitted. One has to be of good moral standing and must have an above average performance academically. A nominee is asked to provide teacher recommendations and participate in the People to People interview process. Without those, a student can't go. Inah passed all that with flying colors.
Now comes the hard part... The trip to go abroad is NOT free. There is a tuition fee of $5,660.00 and a minimum pocket money of about $400.00 for the 20-day adventure trip (That's $20.00 a day allowance for her for 20 days). Here I am with my family, doing all we can to raise that money for Inah. Mom Aida and Inah are conducting their small fund-raising projects here and there in Sacramento, CA. My Dad Romy, Sis Maida and Bro-in-law, Joey are doing what they can in Manila, Philippines and my friend Jaz is helping out as well in General Santos, Philippines. Here I am in Boston, MA and online appealing to you our dear friends, relatives, acquaintances and those who happen to read this with a good heart to help a student realize a dream.
I know these are tough times for you and me. But please won't you spare some for Inah? I am appealing to everyone in friendster and myspace and everywhere else... Every peso and every dollar counts!! I truly believe with our help, it can happen! We can make it happen for her. We can contribute something to her journey- a journey that she will remember for life.
Please read as much as you can on this website how you can help and read on what the People to People Ambassador Program is all about.
